Zootopia 2 Smashes $1 Billion Fastest-Ever for Animated Films at Global Box Office
Walt Disney Animation Studios' Zootopia 2 races past $1 billion worldwide in just 17 days, setting a new record as the fastest animated film to hit the milestone, while Inside Out 2 leads 2024’s global box office haul.
In a stunning display of animated blockbuster power, Walt Disney Animation Studios’ Zootopia 2 has shattered records by crossing the $1 billion mark at the global box office in a mere 17 days. This lightning-fast achievement crowns it as the fastest-ever billion-dollar earner among all animated films rated PG by the Motion Picture Association, underscoring Disney’s continued dominance in the animation arena.
This milestone makes Zootopia 2 the second film of 2025 to reach the billion-dollar club, following Disney’s Lilo & Stitch. It also marks a historic back-to-back billion-dollar success for Walt Disney Animation Studios, following last year’s triumph with Moana 2. Since 2013, the studio has now proudly amassed five titles surpassing the billion-dollar threshold: Frozen, Frozen 2, Moana 2, Zootopia, and now Zootopia 2.
Inside Out 2 Tops 2024 Box Office
Meanwhile, Inside Out 2 has emerged as the highest-grossing animated film of 2024, raking in an impressive $1.69 billion globally since its June 14 debut. Alongside Moana 2, it is part of a rare trio of animated films this year that have each eclipsed the billion-dollar mark, highlighting a strong year for the genre.
Disney’s stranglehold on the animated box office is further cemented by the fact that it holds four of the top five and nine of the top twelve highest-grossing animated films in history. This includes Frozen 2 with $1.462 billion and the recent blockbuster The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023), which sits fourth with $1.3 billion.
Ne Zha 2 Sets New Record
Not to be overlooked, the Chinese animated sensation Ne Zha 2 has surged ahead to become the highest-grossing animated film ever, surpassing Inside Out 2 with a staggering $1.698 billion worldwide. Directed by Yang Yu (aka Jiaozi), this film’s success signals the growing global influence of international animated features on the box office landscape.
The Billion-Dollar Club Expands
In total, 15 animated films have now crossed the billion-dollar barrier, joining an elite group that includes Disney staples and international hits. This milestone reflects not only the enduring appeal of animation but also the expanding global markets hungry for high-quality, family-friendly entertainment.
